DAY 21

CAMINHO, Portugal to OIA,Spain

What a beautiful day to be back on the road, after our rest day. Our day off was gratefully appreciated by our legs and feet and we are feeling re energized and inspired.

The day started with a 2km walk to the ferry at Caminha port with our “new” American pilgrim friends, who we met at the hotel yesterday. Such wonderful, fun company thank you ladies such a privilege 🙏 .

The ferry ride taking us over to Spain was a quick 20 minutes, and the weather though misty, was fabulous and wind still.

Our first steps onto Spanish soil took us through the port and then a short hilly forest section over to the town of Guarda with its buzzing Centre.

Such a friendly, engaging welcome in Spain, with every second person pointing us in the direction we needed to go or greeting us with Beun Camino.

The most amazing rugged and unspoiled coastal walk was waiting for us at the edge of the town, and we walked for kilometers embracing its misty raw beauty and interesting little hamlets on the way. A welcome cool day’s hike due to the mist shrouding us, and even the last few kms on the main coastal road were painless.

We reached the breathtaking beauty of our town for tonight Oia. Anyone who has watched the series Doc Martin would appreciate this ‘lookalike’ quaint seaside town splashed in mist with an added highlight of the magnificent (now privately owned) monastery of Oia, built in late 1100, taking centre stage.

Overall a lovely easy 20km days walk, which went by so quickly. So good to be on the road again exploring new horizons for Trekking4Trees.
