DAY 23
BAIONA - VIGO Pitch dark this morning when we woke at our usual time of 6.30am. Leaving our Hotel Mosquito for a late sunrise at 8am, we headed to a seafront cafeteria for a quick breakfast of orange juice and espresso. It wasn’t long before we left the city limits climbing steeply into the most beautiful forests we have encountered on this trip 😊💚🌳 All the kilometers of asphalt based walking before and after these magical mountainous and misty forests melted into a distant memory by the time we were enveloped in this wonderland of green and brown. All we were aware of while climbing, invigorated by our surroundings, were the earthy scents of the forest, the sound of our breath as we breathed deeply from the climb, and the distant sound of the foghorn warning the ships out at sea, all while marveling at the beauty of the forests around us. Truly a very special day of 25,2km that went by too quickly! A sense of peace, joy and fortune all rolled up in a wonderful Trekkin4Trees day as we made our way through to our hotel for tonight in Vigo Castrelos. Thank you each and every one of you beautiful donors for giving forests new beginnings and hope🙏💚 100 Km’s left to get to Santiago de Compostela! Mixed feelings as we are getting really close to the end.... 🌳💚🌲 Sleep tight Amigos

DAY 22
OIA - BAIONA The owner run seaside inn we stayed at last night, with its charming Spanish owners, ended up getting our “best personal attention” award so far. Not a word of English spoken by them, and when we indicated that we didn’t understand, they simply spoke Spanish faster thinking this was the solution.😜 Of course we gave up trying to impress on them that we still didn’t understand and nodded gleefully that all was good. Quite a bit of hand gestures and the odd Portuguese word, google translate, and firm thumb holding, resulted in a delicious, tasty vegetable soup, chips, grilled veggies and salad with dessert melon and an espresso for dinner. Such willing, friendly people they were, simply delightful! We were firmly in the grip of thick mist when we ventured out this morning after breakfast, along the rocky shoreline and on dust paths for a few kilometers before being routed via the highway. We missed the mountain climbing turnoff by a couple of kilometers, so we had to turn around and retrace our steps! Getting off the hard asphalt was a blessing as the mist had burnt off and we were feeling it’s harsh surface. Climbing through the forests with views down to the sea was magical and we lapped up the climb with renewed energy and vigor. Over the mountain and down through the next village linked us to our eventual destination for tonight, the coastal town of Biaona. Every Spanish town now seems to reveal another beautiful gem of a discovery and we lapped up the atmosphere of the vibey town, welcomed by the thumping of a chorus of drum beats from a band playing to the crowds in the narrow historical streets of the old quarter where our hotel is situated. Fatigue hit us as we settled in to our room. We are finding it difficult to last until dinner as the restaurants only open at 8.30, about the time we wanting to get some shut eye after the days walk and sightseeing! Dulces sueños amigos |
