DAY 21
CAMINHO, Portugal to OIA,Spain What a beautiful day to be back on the road, after our rest day. Our day off was gratefully appreciated by our legs and feet and we are feeling re energized and inspired. The day started with a 2km walk to the ferry at Caminha port with our “new” American pilgrim friends, who we met at the hotel yesterday. Such wonderful, fun company thank you ladies such a privilege 🙏 . The ferry ride taking us over to Spain was a quick 20 minutes, and the weather though misty, was fabulous and wind still. Our first steps onto Spanish soil took us through the port and then a short hilly forest section over to the town of Guarda with its buzzing Centre. Such a friendly, engaging welcome in Spain, with every second person pointing us in the direction we needed to go or greeting us with Beun Camino. The most amazing rugged and unspoiled coastal walk was waiting for us at the edge of the town, and we walked for kilometers embracing its misty raw beauty and interesting little hamlets on the way. A welcome cool day’s hike due to the mist shrouding us, and even the last few kms on the main coastal road were painless. We reached the breathtaking beauty of our town for tonight Oia. Anyone who has watched the series Doc Martin would appreciate this ‘lookalike’ quaint seaside town splashed in mist with an added highlight of the magnificent (now privately owned) monastery of Oia, built in late 1100, taking centre stage. Overall a lovely easy 20km days walk, which went by so quickly. So good to be on the road again exploring new horizons for Trekking4Trees. Gracias

DAY 19
VIANA DO CASTELO - CAMINHA Leaving behind the beautiful Viana do Castelo, we made our way traversing along the forested hilly backdrop that is the range that runs parallel to the ocean traveling North. This is our last leg in Portugal 🇵🇹 before we catch the ferry into Spain at the Portuguese town of Caminha at the mouth of the river Mino. What a privilege it has been since we started in Portugal nearly 3 weeks back, to be able to contribute and give back, and afford other like minded and generous folk the ease of donating to GreenPopSA through our portal The charming and quaint seaside town of Vila Praia de Âncora 10 km before Caminha is definitely worth a summer visit. We stopped for a short while to take in the beach atmosphere. In fact we had two lovely elderly ladies wanting to stop, sit and strike up a full conversation with us even though they didn’t speak a word of English and us Portuguese! We had exhausted our 6 Portuguese words on them, greeting them and telling them we are from Afrique de Sul, so bid them farewell to continue our Camino.😊😂🇿🇦 It really is gorgeous this part of the northern coast and we look forward to exploring Spain, once we have taken a day’s break here in Caminha . The legs and feet are feeling the effects of walking 8 hours a day for an extended period, and we have decided to take a break tomorrow, our first in around 500km Doing The Way as a Vegan has had its challenges, wnd I don’t think the word “vegan” has ever been heard in this region, or they have driven out anyone who threatened the status quo of the carnivores !! 😂 We are checking out offline for a days rest tomorrow, so chat soon !! Boa noite / Buenas Noches 🌳💚🌲 |
